The hybrid vehicle is truly an innovation. A hybrid vehicle uses multiple energy sources or propulsion systems to provide motive power. This most commonly refers to gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, which use gasoline (petrol) and electric batteries for the energy used to power internal-combustion engines (ICEs) and electric motors. These powerplants are usually relatively small and would be considered "underpowered" by themselves, but they can provide a normal driving experience when used in combination during acceleration and other maneuvers that require greater power.

Share Your Future Car Ideas With PBS' Nova
PBS is looking for input from its audience for an upcoming Nova episode called Car of the Future. PBS is taking feedback on all aspects of the production process and is looking for ideas. Of course the show will cover hybrid cars, but it will also cover technologies such as ethanol, hydrogen and more.
I know I'll be giving them my two cents worth...as soon as they get their PBS E-mail feedback page operating!Share Your Future Car Ideas With PBS' Nova originally appeared on About.com Hybrid Cars on Monday, December 4th, 2006 at 21:58:36. Permalink | Comment | Email this
US plans to label cars 'A+' to 'D'
GASOLINE misers such as the Toyota Prius would get an 'A-' while muscle cars - including the Ferrari 612 - would get a 'D' under a labelling programme proposed by the Obama administration, which wants to convince consumers to buy vehicles that use less energy.
LA Auto Show Begins This Week - Show Me the Hybrids
The Los Angeles Auto Show kicks off this week and I'm hoping it will have a good showing of hybrid vehicles this year, especially since California is home to two of the largest hybrid car markets in the United States. Although there may be some new hybrids to see, the beloved Honda Insight hybrid car will be missing from this year's show, since Honda ended production this fall.
Among other upcoming announcements that will be made at the LA Auto show, there are rumblings that General Motors is "preparing to detail its commitment to new fuel-saving technologies, including new electric vehicles..". While that may or may not include new news about hybrids, it will still be an interesting story to watch.

Here's a fact on hybrid vehicles:
Like many electric cars, but in contrast to conventional vehicles, braking in a hybrid is controlled in part by the electric motor which can recapture part of the kinetic energy of the car to partially recharge the batteries. This is called regenerative braking and one of the reasons for the high efficiency of hybrid cars. In a conventional vehicle, braking is done by mechanical brakes, and the kinetic energy of the car is wasted as heat
A gas-electric hybrid engine is a combination of a gasoline/petrol or diesel internal combustion engine with an electric motor to power a vehicle. Various designs exist for how the motor and engine interact with the drive train. Because the engine recharges the battery smaller batteries are required than in an electric vehicle.
A standard combustion engine is required to operate over a range of speed and power, yet its highest efficiency is in a narrow range of operation. Also, an engine designed for a reduced operating range can be more efficient than a standard engine. The battery storage and electric motor allows the engine to operate at its point of maximum efficiency, to be of a higher efficiency design, and to be smaller than non-hybrid applications.
The gas-electric hybrid uses less gasoline than conventional internal combustion engines and does not have the limitations in range that have been a problem for traditional electric vehicles. This type of piston engine is used in hybrid electric vehicles which have begun to enter the market as of 2002.
