The hybrid vehicle is truly an innovation. A hybrid vehicle uses multiple energy sources or propulsion systems to provide motive power. This most commonly refers to gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, which use gasoline (petrol) and electric batteries for the energy used to power internal-combustion engines (ICEs) and electric motors. These powerplants are usually relatively small and would be considered "underpowered" by themselves, but they can provide a normal driving experience when used in combination during acceleration and other maneuvers that require greater power.

Cars To Be Graded On Fuel Mileage, Emissions Standards
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation are pushing for legislation that would require new cars to bear labels grading them based on fuel mileage and emissions, according to a Reuters report on Monday. The goal, according to Timothy Gardner of Reuters, is "to convince consumers to buy vehicles that use less energy," adding that EPA and ...

Hybrid Car Sales Numbers Vary by Manufacturer
The title of a recent Autoweek article about hybrid car sales read "Not All Hybrids are Hot". As far as I'm concerned that's a good thing. Hybrids don't need to be "hot". In fact I wish that the infiltration of hybrid technology was mainstream and dull, like the concept of front wheel drive. But alas, it looks like hybrids still hold only a small part of the overall car sales in the U.S.

My biggest concern when reading the article is the slow sales of hybrids made by American car manufacturers. Being late to the hybrid car game and focusing on SUV's has not helped Ford, Mercury and Saturn. Toyota on the other hand has increased its share of the hybrid car market to nearly 50% of all hybrids sold.

Fuel-Efficiency Formula Needs Cars Wired With Better Brainpower, Less Vroom
A University of Michigan researcher says it’s possible to triple fuel economy in gasoline-powered cars by 2035, but it’ll mean getting our automotive kicks from smart electronic technology and other forms of virtual performance rather than horsepower. As federal regulators are poised to propose the next round of fuel economy mandates, John DeCicco, a senior lecturer at the School of Natural ...

Here's a fact on hybrid vehicles:

An R.L. Polk survey of 2003 model year cars showed that hybrid car registrations in the United States rose to 43,435 cars, a 25.8 % increase from 2002 numbers. California, the nation's largest state with 1/8th of the country's population, had the most hybrid cars registered with 11,425. The proportionally high number may be partially due to the state's higher gasoline prices and stricter emissions rules, which hybrids generally have little trouble passing

A gas-electric hybrid engine is a combination of a gasoline/petrol or diesel internal combustion engine with an electric motor to power a vehicle. Various designs exist for how the motor and engine interact with the drive train. Because the engine recharges the battery smaller batteries are required than in an electric vehicle.

A standard combustion engine is required to operate over a range of speed and power, yet its highest efficiency is in a narrow range of operation. Also, an engine designed for a reduced operating range can be more efficient than a standard engine. The battery storage and electric motor allows the engine to operate at its point of maximum efficiency, to be of a higher efficiency design, and to be smaller than non-hybrid applications.

The gas-electric hybrid uses less gasoline than conventional internal combustion engines and does not have the limitations in range that have been a problem for traditional electric vehicles. This type of piston engine is used in hybrid electric vehicles which have begun to enter the market as of 2002.
