The hybrid vehicle is truly an innovation. A hybrid vehicle uses multiple energy sources or propulsion systems to provide motive power. This most commonly refers to gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, which use gasoline (petrol) and electric batteries for the energy used to power internal-combustion engines (ICEs) and electric motors. These powerplants are usually relatively small and would be considered "underpowered" by themselves, but they can provide a normal driving experience when used in combination during acceleration and other maneuvers that require greater power.

Toyota Hybrid Car Expert Dies in Plane Crash
When I heard the news that Dave Hermance died in an airplane accident on Saturday, November 25th, I was shocked and saddened. It truly hit me like a ton of bricks. Dave was the Executive Engineer at Toyota Technical Center in Gardena, California. According to the Toyota press release he had worked at Toyota Technical Center for 15 years in the powertrain and advanced technologies division.
Whenever great minds were getting together to discuss hybrid technology you can bet that Dave was there. He clearly had a passion for hybrids and he shared his hybrid knowledge enthusiastically. No matter how complex the topic, he always had a way of making it simple to understand. For example, here's a presentation that he did for a government committee from July 2006 called "Hybrid Cars: Increasing Fuel Efficiency and Reducing Oil Dependence". (You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the file.)
I had the incredible privilege of meeting Dave and talking with him about Toyota hybrids one evening. It will always be a cherished memory. The hybrid community has suffered a great loss in his passing. I wish the best for his family. He will certainly be missed.

Assist hybrids use the engine for primary power, with a torque-boosting electric motor also connected to a largely conventional powertrain. The electric motor is essentially a very large starter motor, which operates not only when the engine needs to be turned over, but also when the driver "steps on the gas" and requires extra power. Honda's hybrids including the Insight use this design; their system is dubbed Integrated Motor Assist (IMA). Assist hybrids differ fundamentally from full hybrids in that they cannot run on electric power alone. However, since the amount of electrical power needed is much smaller, the size of the battery systems is reduced
A gas-electric hybrid engine is a combination of a gasoline/petrol or diesel internal combustion engine with an electric motor to power a vehicle. Various designs exist for how the motor and engine interact with the drive train. Because the engine recharges the battery smaller batteries are required than in an electric vehicle.
A standard combustion engine is required to operate over a range of speed and power, yet its highest efficiency is in a narrow range of operation. Also, an engine designed for a reduced operating range can be more efficient than a standard engine. The battery storage and electric motor allows the engine to operate at its point of maximum efficiency, to be of a higher efficiency design, and to be smaller than non-hybrid applications.
The gas-electric hybrid uses less gasoline than conventional internal combustion engines and does not have the limitations in range that have been a problem for traditional electric vehicles. This type of piston engine is used in hybrid electric vehicles which have begun to enter the market as of 2002.
